Evulation For Our Brighton Performance

On Friday 20th May  we performed as The Brighton Fringe Festival which is such a great opportunity. Overall, I am really proud of the cast and TTA and its was such a nice.

We did a warm up on the grass which really fun. At first I was quite self conscious about it doing as everyone was watching like we were mad or something however I got more comfortable. I found the voice warm up helpful as I sore throat that day which I think did effect my performance.  Doing the Side Stretch felt really liberating to do it in fresh air and on grass bare foot.  We did are normal warm up which we do before every performance I think the one that makes us ready and energised for the show is when we are all standing in a circle clapping and we say different sounds. I think this makes us work together as an ensemble which is important and we just have lots of fun with it.

We were all quite nervous for the show as we were just throw into a space where we have never performed before. We knew some things would go wrong however we would have to fix them on the spot. From looking back at the performance I think only small things went wrong like at the beginning when we the Andronicus have to run around the set following Lauren and Sybil. This bit went a bit as from where we were standing we had to run behind the set so the audience couldn't see us. I don't think the audience really noticed something going wrong as we just went with it however we should of ran the other so the audience could see most of the chase.  Another thing that slightly went wrong was when we exit after the ensemble parts with Titus cutting off his hand.  We exited when we shouldn't of as next it Gemma and Deliany sword fight where we stand on the sides on a diagonal . However did exited and then entered half way through the sword fight. This didn't look bad but it properly just looked a bit messy. Having said this the show went really well and we expected some things to go wrong.

The moments in the piece that looked really good was  the Haka. I think this really supersized the audience and really got there attention a the beginning.  The Haka was properly as good as the one in the New Theatre because we were giving it everything we could. The Haka really sets the energy of the piece so if we performed it badly I think it would be really hard for us to perform the rest of the show really well. Another other moments that went really well was the tree. From where I was positioned I couldn't see that much however our breath was all in time with one another which effected when we moved our sticks. I think  when the tree is done properly it looks really cool but when done half hearty it looks bad, in case we were fully committed to our role which meant the tree looked really good and it complemented the scene.   In addition to this, I think the ending the deaths worked really well and better than I thought as I thought the strobe lighting made the scene however in this performance we fully committed and it still looked really cool. As well  as the on Delaney line half of the cast breath in die and we fall to the floor and someone catches us. Considering we were on hard concrete I thought everyone would just do it really carefully however everyone in the ensemble just fell to the floor which must of looked so good and made the ending as strong as the Haka.

Overall, I think our voices were stronger and louder to be heard. I was worried that people wouldn't be able to hear us as there were other performance around the park. However, Ben said he could hear everyone and when I was backstage I could hear everyone. We were all really happy with this feedback as we have only performed outside in a rehearsal

On a personal I note I think my performance was ok overall. I don't think I was connected to the given circumstances or my character Marcus. I think this is because I went out the night before which I shouldn't of done and I quite disappointed in myself of doing so. Obliviously I cant d anything about it now but  I have to take it as a lesson leant as I think performed better in rehearsals and in the New Theatre.  My vocal technique wasn't the best as my voice wasn't grounded and I felt my voice cracking in my monologue due to throat killing. Again, this is a lesson learnt to look after voice the night before. Having said this I did really best to perform with energy and life which I think I did quite well. My monologue went okay however I think I could of opened up to the audience a bit more as I felt like I was performing to the myself and Sybil. In addition to this, I think my feet were quite grounded to floor which is something I struggled with in rehearsals so I am quite proud of myself with this. Overall, my performance was okay I now know what to do for Stratford in July , which I am now so excited to perform at the RSC.

I am really thankful that we were able to have all the set in Brighton as I didn't think we would have the platform. I think having all the set did make us more comfortable to perform somewhere where we have never performed before as we were all quite worried about how we would perform. In addition to this, having all of the set made us work the space more as we know own the space as we have performed in it a number of times. Furthermore, I think from performing with the set many times has made us really own it a lot more as it is now our world of the play (if that makes sense) .

Finally, I am really proud of the members of the Titus company as it was such nice day where we all got to hang out in Brighton for the day. In addition to this, we all really wanted the show to be as good as it was in the new theatre and I think it was for different reasons. For example, ours voices were stronger and the Haka was unexpected. I think Stratford will now be amazing as we have performed the show now twice to an audience.

Evlaution Of The Performances

The New Theatre:

On Thursday 12th May 2016 we performed Titus Andronicus at The BRIT School in The New Theatre.  Overall, I am so proud of the cast and TTA strand for pulling the whole together and it became one of the best Shakespeare show in this season (in my opinion).

The main elements that made the show for me was energy. There was constant flow of energy being passed onto one another which created this really powerful piece of theatre. I think the reason for this was because we all worked as a team and looked after each other on stage. This is so important as an ensemble because it allowed us in rehearsal to explore our characters and the given circumstances which then followed onto the show.  Having energy made our characters strong and powerful which gave everyone much more of an intention. This is the style of how we wanted to portray the play and I'm really glad we did because it was completely different to the other Shakespeare shows. In my opinion the beginning of the show starts of the energy as the Haka grabs every ones intentions and its not what people expect females to do.  I would the Haka was good in both shows however I think the 4:30pm it was better because we just warmed up as a group and we were so full energy. In addition to this, as a cast we all love the Haka and I think we just really wanted to play around with it and show off to our all friends about our play. I'm not saying the 7pm Haka wasn't good but I think I just personally was a bit more nervous as my parents were coming to see and I really don't like them watching me act.  In addition to this, I think the energy in both performances were there because we all knew our intentions in each moment in play. Linking back to the Haka we all wanted to scare and intimidate the audience and we did this really well. Another moment I would say is when Marcus shows Titus Lavinia when her hands and tongue has been chopped off. I think I did this section really well because I knew my intentions which meant I was confident on what I was saying which naturally brought energy to the piece.

Moreover, another thing that worked really well was the show is nothing that people expected it be. As an all female cast I think the audience thought the show would be more light hearted and not as gory, but it was. A moment that worked really well was the ending where lots of people dye, The Lighting was wicked and complemented what was going on stage as the ensemble pretending there where fly's around them and then everyone was dying. People wont expected there to be so many deaths especially at the end as most Shakespeare have a happy ending. Furthermore, as a general he audience didn't expect us to be so strong and powerful in everything we do and the detail in how we did it was amazing. For example, at the beginning of the term Ben taught us the power in the way me walk. I never thought the way walked really defined our characters however it does massively and I have started to see a big difference from playing Marcus Andronicus.
but on the process as a whole. I have finally learnt to have and enjoy myself while I am rehearsing and performing. This year I kind of forgot how much I loved acting and why I do , I kind of just did for a grade and not for the passion. However I am really happy I have learnt not to stress out about everything.  This meant the performance was the first time I have ever felt nervous but confident on the show and I think that really showed.  It sounds really weird describing my two emotions are they both opposite however  I think I found the perfect of wanting to perform and being scared that something many go wrong.

The moments I enjoyed was my monologue, this is something I've always enjoyed doing and showed when it came to 7pm show as it more realistic as it ever has. The 4:30 show was good however my acting technique wasn't good as my body was ground but not voice. My voice was very high and did hurt after a little afterwards. However when it came to 7pm show I think my voice was a lot more grounded and more connection to the given circumstances was the best they have ever been. I think the connection to play has been easier for me than the technique as vocal technique is something I do find quite difficult to control. However, from performing Titus Andronicus I have learnt to ground my voice no matter what character I am playing. This will be really helpful for me when we perform in outside in Brighton and Stratford.  As my body my voice were grounded in the second show I think my performance as whole was better as I am starting to understand the balance between the both.

A general note to both shows would be the commitment. This is something I am so proud of the cast as normally with shows you always have that one person who doesn't care but with Titus everyone wanted the show to be to something special. It felt so good to work with everyone who wanted the same thing. This is something that showed in the way we warmed up as a cast and in how we always spoke so highly of show. In addition, you could see the commitment in everything in the performance. For example, when some of cast (including myself ) had to be a tree for about 10 minutes. At the beginning of the rehearsal process this section honestly did not look good however I think the ensemble complemented the scene really well and just made it look a bit different.  In addition to this, the commitment in our characters was incredible and made me realise how talented our year. I mean I've  always that we have some wicked actors in our year but sometimes you just forget as they your friends.  Some For example I think Kit and Amber did a really good playing Chiron and Demetris as these two characters are really evil and the way they incorporated  more of animalistic manner was really good.

Something that worked as a whole in the show was the form and style. The way we slightly changed the form to the play being set ' nowhere but everywhere ' is cool as its shows that the setting of the piece doesn't matter and only story does. This is something another thing I have leant in the process especially when it comes to Strawberry Picking as I am directing a show where the setting and date of the play doesn't matter. When Ben explained this to us I was thinking it was really strange to do this but now doing the performance I think it was really clever. the style of the piece was something really new to me and at first I was scared of it and everything has to be so big and power. The style wasn't naturalistic and quite experimental due to the ensemble moments and lighting. In addition to this, it was inspired by Peter Brook and Yoshi Oida who are directors and theatre practitioners. The style of the piece was also bold and animalistic. An example of the boldness and animalistic moments is the opening scene when the Andronic and Goths are in the background we were strong warrior with animalistic  features like bending our knees and changing our posture.

Furthermore, another thing we did well in the performance is us sharing the story with audience. In the tech run we didn't do this and I was worried that I might shy way from the audience due to nervous however I didn't and I am really proud this. As well as this, we shared to the audience however I think we all got the perfect balance of sharing the story to each other and to the audience. Therefore this looked really natural and interesting. This is one of the elements in acting that's needs balance or wise the audience will zone out if you are not involving them but then wont believe you if all you are doing is directing everything to them as it will look fake.

Another thing, that went well was everyone projected there voices. At times in other Shakespeare shows I couldn't hear everyone as they weren't projecting however this is one of the technique we really worked on and I'm glad we did as it made a massive difference to the show.  I think our voices were slightly better in 7pm show because in the 4pm we different want to loose our voices for the 7 o'clock so we were cautions. in the first show.

Finally, I think helped the show be amazing is all the technical aspects of the show. For example the lighting was so good and I loved it when every time some one died red lighting would make the whole look more dramatic and bold. In addition to this, the staging was simple but effective and we all worked within the space really well baring in mind we only did two rehearsal before in the theatre before the show. The sound was wicked and I loved the sound effective which I'm my opinion  made the audience feel really uncomfortable.

Overall, I'm really happy with how our show  went and I'm grateful that I was put in the all female cast. At first I didn't want to be in it all as I thought it would really judgement and gossipy however it was the complete opposite and I have become so much closer to a lot of girls in the theatre because of Titus.

Wednesday 11th May

Today is the day before the show and its when everyone is starting to get really nervous and excited about the show, including myself. I know the show will be amazing but there is just so much to think about and has to be in order for the show to be brilliant.

The run through we did today was so good and it was the best we had ever done it. No one forgot there lines and if they did I didn't notice. The energy in the room was amazing and was making everyone work so hard in order for the run to be great. Everyone's acting  was strong and I was really impressed with Esther who is playing Titus Andronicus 2. What I think Esther did really well was she started experimenting and trying new things with her lines. In addition to this, I think everyone really stepped it due to the tech run where everyone was really disappointed in. Ben said that having a bad tech run is good thing as you need a bad run before the actual performance and I guess he was right. Because we all really wanted this run to go amazing!

The Haka was the best that we had everyone done it and we are looked crazy and terrifying (in a good way) .  We all put so much energy into it which is a good thing as this starts the whole show off to a really strong point. This is what has been missing when we have been doing Haka before as it just looked like some teenage girls clapping however now we look like strong and scary warriors, which is what we want.

Another part in the show which was worked was the love day dance. Everyone was fully committed and our breath was in time with one another.  The most important thing I have learn from Ben is how important our breath and how that has to be connected with bodies. The love day dance is a perfect example of this and we were all going up and down in time out breath and I really wish we filmed because I really want to see how it looked.  In addition to this, Katie and I eye contact was really good as we didn't take our eyes off one another once. I think this made the improvised non- contact connection even stronger as we weren't look at anyone else.

In addition to this, the use space was really good as in the tech run we started to clump together and only share our performance with each other and not to the audience.  I think this could of been due we are more comfortable performing in a theatre room than we were in the new theatre as it was the first time we rehearsed in there.  I thin when it comes to tomorrow it will be fine as we will know what not to do. In addition to this, we had a warm up which was really helpful as we did new exercises such as putting our arms out and sharply moving in and out in order for us to allow are arms to flow naturally when we perform. When I did this is really hurt and I thought that this would do the opposite for me as it made me want to relax my arms and not work them.

However, when I started to act in the role of Marcus I did start to notice a difference in the way I reacted with the given circumstances and how I express my objectives. For example, at one point at grabbed Katie's hand to grab her attention. I didn't even mean to do this it was just a natural response which is something I have learnt on Wednesday.

Another technique on Wednesday was not to wobble. I never noticed this before but in my monologue I tend to wobble which makes my foot not grounded and connected to floor. This is another I have learnt in the process of Titus Andronicus is how important the walk of your character and wobbling isn't something people do in real everyday all the time. In order to stop me from doing this Ben got me to play Granma foot steps. I honestly didn't know what this game as I cant remember playing it as kid and games where really my thing as a kid. I didn't really know why I was playing it until I started to notice that my feet was grounded when Sybil turned around and looked at me and I completely froze. In addition to this, I took a lot more care where I was walking and how I was walking. I found this is really helpful because I will apply it to my monologue.

Overall, I am really happy with how the run went which has made all the girls so excited for tomorrow. Also, it was such a good feeling to know that the run went really well and I think this is motivate us to want to feel that way again tomorrow.

Tech Run

Today we had our tech run which was really helpful and new to us as it was the first run of the play in the space. I was quite nervous as it is starting to sink in how soon our show is and TTA where sitting down and watching the show for the first time.

Overall,  we were all really disappointed on the run as so many things went wrong and I didn't feel like there was enough detail in our performance. The main cause of this is because we didn't warm up before the show and everyone just came from lunch so didn't have there mind on what to do. This has made me understand how important warm up is and why we do warm up. Though out the run there was no energy and we weren't putting 100% into our performance. However, the way this play is directed we have to have high energy 100% of the time epically scenes like the Haka which was the worst we had ever done it as it was messy and people wasn't doing the right movement at the right time. In addition, with the Haka we are playing warriors therefore we have to act warriors. In the run we were defiantly not doing this as for some reason we weren't confident in the place which is fair enough as it was the first run.  In the Haka our voices weren't louder enough  which we need to sort out as the Haka gets the show of to a really strong start.

A general would be is our bodies and voices were small as we were only performing to each other and not sharing it out to the audience. This is something I need to think as I wasn't opening to the audience at all and as the audience is on three sides we have to work even harder. Another general note was to balance the space. In one of my scenes Gemma, Katie Sybil and I are all on one side of the stage which looks messy. This is something we will have to redirect tomorrow in order for us to do a run on Wednesday. Another part scene I didn't like was the love day dance. In this we have to all work with each other to balance the space as it is a no contact jam with our partners. This scene was properly the wirst we have ever done it as there was no live behind our eyes which is really important for the dance as there is no speaking involved just breath. In addition to this, I think our breath was in sinc everyone else's which made the dance look okay however we were just doing it half heartedly.

A personal note that Ben gave to me was not to wobble. I get this a lot when I act and its because I just do it all the time. However, my character Marcus wouldn't wobble and therefore I cant do this as it is so distracting.  To prevent to doing this I need to ground my feet more.

Moreover, we need to react to everything that is going on around us. A moment where this was bad was when Lavinia gets killed right at the end. The ensemble didn't react on bit which made the show look really boring.  Again this can relate to us not having energy so by the end we all kind of gave up which is shame as the final scene is the most important in my opinion.

Overall,  the tech run didn't go as well as we wanted to go however it has made us walk away wanting to work so much to make our show the best it can be. In order for this to happen we need to project more , work the space and give 100% all the time.

Friday 5th May

Today we didn't do a rehearsal however we had to come in to do our tech plot for TTA and Ben to work the technical element to the show.

This gave us the opportunity to have a look at the set which is really exciting as we only get two runs in the theatre before our show.  At times it was a tedious as it was us just sitting down waiting to be called or us just standing in the piece. However this is something I need to get use to as an actor and it gave me the opportunity to explore the space and feel the floor as the way you walk is so important when performing.

This is the set:

I love the set as it simple but effective. What I think really works is the caldron as it stands out. Furthermore , the bamboo sticks are placed in either ends of the platform which I think is really clever. The caldron is major prop to our piece and that's why I am happy that it stands out and is constantly on stand all the time.  The ladders I was slightly scared about as I have to run up and down them at one point however I think this is something I will get use to as we do a run though of the show.

I found this day really productive and I got to explore the theatre which has made me feel more comfortable for our tech run on Monday.

Peter Brook

As our style of the show is inspired by Peter Brook I thought it would be helpful to do some research on him.

Peter Brook was born 21 March 1925 and is an director in film and theatre. He has won many Awards such as Tony and Emmy Awards.  Majority of Brooks shows are amazing such as the production Marat/Sade in 1964 which was the first English production. This got transferred to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Play.   Don't get me wrong Peter Brook is an amazing director however recently he directed a show at the Young Vic called Battlefield and my friend told me that it was bad he didn't want to put his name on the programmes. I think this is really interesting as Peter has been called 'our greatest living theatre director ' who all actors want to work with. I do feel sorry for him as he properly does have a lot pressure to create amazing theatre all the time and all artist will make mistakes at some point in there career.

Peter Brook.JPG
Brook was influenced by Antonin Artaud and his idea of Theatre of Cruelty. I studied Artuad last term and I found it really interesting as I have never studied experimental theatre before. To sum up theatre of cruelty its a form of theatre where Artaud wanted to unleash unconscious in audiences and performers that weren't normally accessible. He wanted theatre to show the audience society nightmares and deepest fears. I can see why Peter Brook is inspired by Artuad as I think not many theatre directors do this now a days which what makes Peter Brook so special.  In 1964 Peter Brook and Charles Marowitz did a The Theatre of Cruelty Season at the royal Shakespeare Company. The season was very popular and properly started Peters career. Peter was also inspired by Joan Littlewood. Brook really looked to Joan because at one point he called her 'the most galvanising director in mid -20th century Britain ' . He was also inspired by Jerzy Grotowski , Bertolt Brecht , Chris Covics and Vsevolod Meyerhold. I think by Peter Brook being inspired by so many people  gave him the opportunity to keep on creating original theatre and making his mind on what he wants to use and not want to use from there techniques.

Brook's first production was Dr Faustus in 1943 which was performed at the Torch Theatre in London . In 1947 assistant directed Romeo and Juliet and Love's Labour Lost. His career then took a massive peak in 1947- 1950 where he was Director of Productions at the Royal Opera House and Covent Garden.  Skipping a couple of years in 1970 Brook was the founder of The International Centre for Theatre Research. This was a company made up of actors, dancers and musicians that travelled around the middle east in the early 70's.  The company was based at the Bouffes du Nord Theatre in Paris since 1974. The company still exists however in 2008 Peter resigned as artistic director and Olivier Mantei and Olivier Poubelle took over.

Learning about Peter Brook has been really interesting and is someone who I should be seeing his work as he is such a good director. Finally, it is helpful for me to learn about other theatre directors as I want to be one myself.

Wednesday 4th May

In todays session we did the normal side stretch warm up and the exploration of the back, legs and arms. From doing the exercise for exploring different ways my body has helped me find new ways of coming up to standing. I think this is helpful for an actor as I am moving body and allowing myself to be as free as possible.

After this, Ben spoke to us about how the show is over 1hour 30mins and how we need to really speed up the transitions. So Ben made us do this exercise where we had do a funny version of the play in under 10 minutes. At first I didn't really know how we would make the play Titus Andronicus a comedy as there is so much death to it however in the end we did.  The funny version of the play was about 17 minutes. As this was nearly double over the time we wanted it to be I was concerned as the run yesterday was 2 hours.

After this, Ben decided to give us a break as we worked so hard. When we came back ask Ben if we could do a run through of the show outside. The reasons for this was we will be performing outside on Friday 20th May and performing outside is completely different to performing inside in my opinion. Performing outside was so nice because it was such a nice day and I feel like everybody worked a lot harder than as there was primary school next door and lots of things that could of distracted the audience. It is so important to work harder when performing outside as the audience are much more likely going to zone out due to the distractions. I personally loved performing outside as normally theatres are really hot and stuffy but as we were in the shade it was really cool and refreshing.  In addition to this, I think this rehearsal was when people started to find there characters more for example Hannah. I think what Hannah did really was she had strong charastics that were bold and big which suited her character Saturinus.  In addition to this,  this rehearsal made everything speed up abit more as the run came to 1 hour and 27 minutes which is really good. I think the show will be 1hour 20minutes as there are some points in the play that do need to speed like especally the transitions from scene to scene.  The example of this is the second Haka. I personally think the introduction dropped energy. However , having said this we did pick up the transition when we all got into formation.  In my opinion, the opening of this scene needs to happen quicker as I just think its a sloppy because it is slow.

Overall , the show is in a really good place and I was really proud of everyone as we have all worked really hard to make the show really good.

Tuesday 3rd May

Today in Titus Andronicus we started with exploring the spine and the side stretch.  Comparing to week one of doing these warm ups I have improved massively. The things I have improved is my connection to breath. My body and breath are becoming which is something I have noticed a lot in my everyday life. For example, when I go to the gym I can run on the treadmill a lot longer now as my breath is in time with my running paste. As well as this, I am paying attention to detail by fully connecting to every movement by moving each muscle / ligament. I am really happy that I am starting to see this difference in the warm up as I having beginning applying to my acting. A great example of this when I am a tree and I have to move one arm on the exhale.  However the reason why I am finding the warm ups more effective is because before the lessons begin at 9 I am in a theatre room at 8:30 stretching and warm up so I am read before the lesson has begun. I am find this helpful as well and it gets into the right for the side stretch.

After the warm ups we went though the physical pieces to the play which in my opinion are the weakest as we all have to be in sync with another which is difficult. The physical moments in the play is the Haka, the love dance and the second Haka. The first Haka has come along way since we first did it and everyone has started to come out of there shell a lot by creating their warrior. The only thing I would say that I need to improve is trusting myself that I know the Haka as at times I do tend to look at what other people are doing. In the show I cant do this as the audience will notice and it just looks weak. The love dance I think is fine and nothing really improving apart from to keep experimenting with how with move our body in time with the breath.    The second Haka is something I feel like does need improving as it looks messy by the way we our positioned and we are all slightly out of time with each other. I think the bit that looks messy to me is when we use place our arms to flow as some people have their knees bent but others are moving down similar to the first Haka which in my opinion looks better. Having said this is a really easy thing to change and I think we are in a good place with the show physical movements in general. I think it is helpful as we are all starting to trust each other from where we all know each other really well now. As we all worked really hard on theses movements Ben allowed to go for an early break.

When we came back from the break we did a run through of the show. The run though went okay but it was a bit stoppy starty which lead the play to be a running time of over two hours. Which got us all quite concerned as the play is only 49 pages.  The run through went well and I feel like I used the seven states tension really especially in monologue. I think when I enter for the first time is as quite as I took detail to step I was taking before I said my line. In addition to this, as Katie is Titus I feel like we already have this sisterly connection as we have been close friends for years. This is something I picked in the first weeks rehearsal as we fight like sisters and get along like sisters. I have used the Side Stretch in my attention to detail for when walk as this is introducing my character. The section I need to improve is my second line as I struggle to say and I am worried for the show as when I am nervous this may effect the way I say it. The part I think I did quite well is when Gemma and I stick up for Becky when Katie kills her as Becky is our brother.  I love the tension there between us and we can all really the atmosphere building through this.  However this is this scene I struggle to say' here in virtues nest that died in honour and Lavinia cause ' . I struggle to say the word 'Lavinia ' and I end up saying Vavinia. It is really annoying and frustrating when my head is saying one word but my mouth is something else. However it is something I that just need to improve as actor.   As well as this, I think I am improving my stammer as at the beginning I was quite weak at ensemble elements such as the tree and the giving birth section however now I am fully going for it and sustaining myself through out.  Overall , I think did quite well in the run though however I just need improve my technique in my voice and when it comes to performing outside the audience might not be able to hear me.

At end Ben gave us notes and I found them really helpful and there were some things that I never noticed in my performance but now I do when Ben said them.

The Haka feet - The haka feet are meant to kick backwards however I am forgot and started kicking like my legs were in some sort of V shape. Small things like this make a big difference to piece and I am glad Ben pointed this out as I have never noticed it before.

Smiling - Basically in monologue I have this line that is "Alas , a crimson river of warm blood " and when we first did a run through blocking the scene Sybil pulled this face where coughing up blood as a joke and now every time I say the line I just picture Sybil doing the face which made me laugh so much. This is some thing I need to control and stop as its wretches my monologue and the scene.

Another really important note is my acting is internal and I'm not connecting to Sybil. I think this is because whenever I practiced my monologue I would do by myself and not with Sybil which I think has made me not realise Sybil's existence in the space. To overcome , I think I need to start practising with Sybil in my own time and making I am opening to the audience and to Sybil as I am quite closed off.

These were the only notes that I was given and I am was quite surprised of his as I though there would of been more to improve on.

Titus Andronicus Research

Titus Andronicus was written by William Shakespeare and is thought to of been written between 1588-1593. In addition to this people think it was Shakespeare's first tragedy. The play is famous of being such a violent and bloody, which was properly poplar in the 16th century as they still had laws such as capital punishment (which didn't get abolished till the 20th century ) .  I think this is why I am really excited to put on this play because we are doing an all female cast which would of never happened in Shakespeare time.

The play is set during the Roman Empire. The play is about the life of Titus who is a roman general. The people of Rome love Titus and want him to be emperor, however he doesn't think he should be as he isn't line therefore he says Saturninus should be emperor. The main themes of the play are death and revenge and I really like how Ben is fully exploring all the ideas of how we can exaggerate the themes.

From what historians can find the first performance of Titus Andronicus was recorded in Philip Henslowe's diary on 24 January 1594 and where performed by Sussex's Men of Titus and ondronicus. As well as this, a printer called John Danter published a book called a Noble Roman Historye of Tytus Andronicus.  Also at the end of 1594 another play was published which was called The Most Lamentable Romaine Tragedie of Titus Andronicus. Learning  that there are different version of the play is really interesting as it makes think that Shakespeare may have got his ideas from somewhere else. I would love to actually read the one of these and compare to Shakespeare's to see this what is similar about them. Epically when some people believe that the play was written warlier in 1614 by Ben Jonson in Bartholomew Fair. Jonson said "He that will swear, Jeronimo or Andronicus are the best plays, yet shall pass unexcepted at, here, as a man whose judgement shows it is constant, and hath stood still these five and twenty, or thirty years."  As I haven't read the Bartholmew Fair I cant really comment on this however I would really like to read and compare it.

The play wasn't performed for over 300 years in England until 8 October 1923 where the it returned to The Old Vic and was directed by Robert Atkins. The show had stars such as Wilfred Walter playing Titus , Florence Saunders as Tamora , Jane Bacon as Lavinia and George Hayes as Aaron. From researching about the production it was viewed very highly which I am glad of as it must of been really exciting to see a play that hasn't been performed for over 3 centuries. The way Atkins presented the play was with a strong sense of Elizabethan theatrical authenticity with not many props.  This was a great success for the the Box Office and The complete Works presentation.

However, the best and most successful production of Titus Andronicus was directed by the one and only Peter Brook. at the RSC in 1955.  the show starred Laurence Olivier as Titus , Maxine Audley as Tamora , Anthony Quayle as Aaron and Viven Leigh as Lavinia.  The media actually thought that the show fail and end Brook's career but they couldn't be more wrong. However Brook did make some strange cuts such as removing Marcus's speech about discovering Lavinia and removed some of the scenes in act 4.  I was quite surprised When I found Brook cut Marcus monologue as I thought this is something is un cut able as it fits in to the storyline. However I haven't read the full version of Titus Andronicus it make work however it wont in our adaptation. The production also Titus hand being cut off was never and they used red ribbons to symbolise the blood wounds. Personally, when you think of Titus Andronicus the first I think of is Titus having his hand chopped off and this not being on stage most of been really strange for the audience as this something that they were properly expecting. Obviously I didn't production but the cuts must of been cleverly done for the show to be such a success.  As well as this, the production went on a tour around Europe due to popular demand.

Finally, learning about different productions of Titus Andronicus is really important and has made me realise how this isn't put on enough because it is a really good play.

Introduction To Yoshi Oida

As our version of Titus Andronicus is inspired by Yoshi Oida I thought it would be a good idea to a little about him.  Yoshi Oida is a Japanese actor , director and write. He was born 1933 in Japan (Kobe).  Yoshi Oida have taken part in all kings od art such as television , films and theatre. He then moved onto working with Peter Brook in France in 1968. I find this interesting that Yoshi worked with Peter Brook as he is another theatre practitioner who we are inspired by.  In 1970 he joined the International Centre of Theatre Research which was founded by Peter Brook ( shows that they got alone quite well. ) and then went on to participate in The Bouffes du Nord Theatre

As well as theatre in France Yoshi took part in films such as The Pillow Book and three theoretical books on theatre which has been translated into many languages. Personally, I have always known about Yoshi Oida however I have never study him at school so I think it would be really helpful for me to get a copy of one of his books as I always here people mention him. The three book  he wrote were The floating Actor , The Invisible Actor and The Cunning Actor. The floating an the Invisible actor as the two books that would properly benefit me as in them he talks about working Peter Brook  and the traditions of western theatre.

It is important to know a bit of background research of the practitioner  that are director is inspired so we can understand them and get ideas for ourselves on our characters and the show.

Seven States Of Tension

I have briefly already spoken about this but one of the comments I get a lot in my acting is that I build up and up the tension to the point where it just stays there so I thought it would be really helpful for me to go over the seven states of tension again as I found this a really helpful exercise when I did it in year 10.  As well as this I will mark the scenes that I am in with a level so I can experiment more when I am going over my lines.

The Seven States of Tension was intentioned by a  French practitioner called Jacques Lecoq. This technique has inspired other theatre companies such as Complicate and Told By an Idiot.

I found this really helpful image online that sums up each level:

7-levels

From exploring each level I don't think Marcus is a laid back man and therefore he isn't 1-3 thought the whole play and I don think he has been 1-3 through out this whole life as he is the type of person who holds it all together.

From doing this exercise has made me understand the difference between each level and has help me explore different way of portraying Marcus emotion.  However I did find it quite difficult to build from 6 to 7 as I felt like I couldn't push any more however I eventually did and I was knackered by the end of it.

These are most of my lines where I have decided what state I should be in.  At the minute I have found it helpful to do each thought by its tension so I can transition into each state. However this is will properly change when it comes to rehearsals.

Costumes

On Friday 29th we got to try on our costumes. From what I can see the costumes look great and are really comfortable. Everyone has a similar with added accessorises to match their character. For example, my character will be wearing a red sash and Katie will be wearing a helmet which looks so cool!

The costumes are leggings and a leotard but with tea dye fabric sewed on o make it not look like a leotard and leggings. At first I was slightly worried about wearing a leotard on stage however after seeing everyone wear it has made me feel less insecure.

Finally, I think I so cool how the TTA are making the costumes themselves and I know they have a lot of work to do for the end of next week however but I'm sure they will get it done to a high understand.

Week 7 - Thursday 28th April

Today we got given our timetable for next week as we tech runs and plots etc. This has made me realise how soon the show which is quite scary as there is still a lot more detail I think we need to add.  I thought this would make us have a really productive rehearsal and we would run the whole second half this wasn't the case. We only got through two scenes, even though there is ensemble for these two scene there still is no excuse to why we only got this amount done and it is shame and we have no one else blame but ourselves.

Having said this I do feel more confident on the two scene we did.  the two scenes we did was after the second Haka and the end scene. This is the scene where I am Goth soldier and I am happy that we went over this scene because after seeing the theatre I am starting to work out how I can add move my body in the space. For example , at one point I have to help tie up Aaron but what I need to start thinking about is how would an Goth tie up Aaron because before hand I would just run and help tie him. For this I think I am going to think about the animal is a hyena and the Laban movement of slash so I can start to explore my character of a goth.

In the last scene I am a roman soldier and I am finding it hard to connect to when Lavinia dies. I think it is because I am soldier who I think would be strong and use to seeing death and therefore wont cry. For scene to work I think I may need to look at how I connect to me playing Marcus and how I connect to Lavinia.

Overall, I did find this rehearsal helpful however the class could of definitely got more done and as we only have one week left of rehearsals we need to start focusing more.

Week 7 - Wednesday 27th April

In this week rehearsals we got the opportunity to work see our set in the new theatre and to do a run through of the show. Overall,  from what I have seen of the set I think it looks great and TTA are doing a really good job. The only small thing I would is the cauldron needs a bit evil. However having said this, the cauldron isn't yet complete so I cant say I don't like it yet. From looking at the space it is a lot bigger than our rehearsal space, which is good thing however it just means that we have to work a lot harder. Another thing I noticed was we need to vocally work harder as everything in the theatre absorbs sound.

Before we begun the run through TTA had to take us round all of the entrances and exits which is really important as now to need to start picturing us exiting though the doors and knowing where to enter next. We should of all ready known what doors we enter and exit but now we need to work how long we have to get to next queue. After we did this we started the run the show.

The Haka is the introduction to the show which did go well however there just wasn't enough room. We are all starting to make are own characters in this section which I think is really good as it means we are becoming more confident. The only thing we would need to do is rearrange the formation in order for everyone to fit. When we got to the first scene the blocking seemed to corresponded nicely and everyone knew what they were doing. The only thing that went funny was when  Katie takes Olivia into the corner of the stage  but Olivia has to walk backwards and over the muddle thing that surrounds the stage. I think small actions liked this happened a lot through out of the run as we have never worked in the space before. Things like this made the run stop and start due however this needs to happen so we can work out what to do. An important change to the opening scene is I exit after the Haka and come on when I first say my line 'Long Live Lord Titus....' . I spoke to Ben and suggested this idea as I felt like I was bit irreverent to the scene and I would get in the way when Samara gets carried off.  Furthermore it gives my character more of an intention to be happy and proud when I see Titus.

The show was stop and start like this however I wouldn't say there is much to change. The part I would slightly change is the love day could expand off the stage maybe and into the entrance A and B so there is more room on stage. Another element is the trees I think the trees just look messy as whole as it is so hard to stay still for 15 minutes in a good strong position. However, on Wednesday afternoon Ben redirected this section with the bamboo and it looks so much better.  From Tuesday rehearsals in the new theatre I was worried about this section due to the trees however now it has been changed I think it looks so much better.

Due to timing we only got up to when Katie and Esther which is shame as I feel confident on the first half of the show but not the second. I think we need to start focusing on the second half more because a lot of people feel the same way and the ending needs to be just as good as the beginning.  Even though I feel this way I think in about a weeks time it will be fine and everyone will be up to performance level.

For personally notes I would say is I was working a lot harder than I had in the theatre rooms. Which isn't bad thing at all I am quite this is something I noticed this because in the theatre is on three sides therefore we need to work three times harder in order for every audience member to see us.  Another element I would is I need to start saying thy like 'th-eye ' not 'they' as I have been pronouncing it wrong. However having said I'm not massively worried and I know I will get it and Shakespeare was something I feared as a theatre student because of the pronouncatnion of  words however rehearsing  Titus Andronicus has made me a lot more confident.

Finally, I think the run in the theatre went really well and has got me a lot more excited about Titus Andronicus as I know its going to be amazing!

Run through of the show

This week in our rehearsals we did a whole run through of the show.  At first I was quite worried as I didn't think it would it would go that well. However, I think it all went better than we expected it be. It was stop and start due to minor errors but we worked them out managed them out.

Before we start the show starts we do a Haka dance which I through was going to go horribly wrong, I mean it was quite sketchy but it went a lot better that last week and we are all starting to embrasure our inner warrior. Even through it is early days I think we still need to fully cerrmitt to the dance and start adding our characters to it however I think this is will come over time. An element to improve on is we need to believe that we all know the dance as when people start looking around the formation doesn't look strong and we brake character. However I think what works really well in the show is the sound effects we do. I think they are everyone's favourite part as our voices fill the room and we all say them at the same time.

In addition to this, we all remembered are beginning positions and the show began. I think the first five pages where when everyone was off book which isn't that bad however our show is in three weeks so we do need to start getting off script asap so we can properly start doing run through. The small errors in the beginning were when Saturninus is crowned king and when Mutius dies. When Saturninus is crowed king the Andronicus group have to on one knee and say long live lord Saturnine! This went a bit weird as the transition and the order of where we knee. We got there in the end and it did look quite good so we just need to make sure that this doest keep happening as it just wastes time and we are quite behind anyway.  When Mutius dies everyone is meant too freeze and Aaron get the blood pack however no one freezed. This is virtual part in the play and if this doesn't happened when Shanay cant enter or the section wont look that good.  What did work really well was when we got everything right the show looks so good! I think it was good for us to do a whole through as the show as it gave us some belief and confidence because some people where moaning about it before hand.

The went quite smoothly until we got to the love dance. the transition into the dance was quite messy as we have to find our partners. My parter is Katie and as she was on the other side of stage which meant I had to run across the other side of the stage. I need to make sure this does'nt happened in the show as I don't think it looks very neat.  However when we got into the dance it looks so good and the breath that we all do in time with one another is really clever. Then when Nicole changes the rythm of the drum we do a the love dance in slow motion. No one did this and this created a lul in the dance as this makes it easy for us to transition into being dead on the ground. However , even though this happened I am still not concerned as it is something that can easily be changed and we do have a lot remember anyway.

The part that I thought looked really good throughout was us transforming into trees. I really like this bit and it is properly the best transition that we have got right so fair. The trees looked good however we do need to commit to the to this section. I get it that this is really hard as the scene is about 10 minutes long but it looks rubbish if we didn't commit. However , I do think when it comes the tech runs and dress rehearsals it will be fine.

The next section I should comment is my monologue. I would say my monologue is quite good however I to work out my states of tension because I tend to jump into a certain level and I tend to stay there. This is something I will do when it comes to character work. In addition to this, this is something I need to work on in general as when Ben told me I realised that I do it a lot, epically when it comes to monologues, It is a really bad habit that I need to improve so my technique can improve.

As a whole I would say the first half of the show is stronger than the second half just because we have practised it more. The elements that we need to work on in the second have of the show is the energy and transitions. I think the reason why we are loosing energy is because we get work hard on the first half so we get tired and slightly give up on the second half. This is something that people need to work on as if this happens in the show the ending will be rubbish and in my opinion the ending is the most important part in any show.  Furthermore, having energy in the second half will dramaticly improve the acting as a whole.

The transitions I am talking is when the Aaron walks around the cast and we have to picture a fly's around and try and shooo them away. This section could look really good but at the minute it looks quite bad as we aren't picturing seeing fly's we are just pretending.

The next part I would say is when we play the Goths. At the minute we are blocking it in however no one is actually playing a goth because we are just sitting on the floor. As the show is in two and half weeks we do need to start being a goth as when it comes to the show we wont know what to do and we will just look stupid on stage.

Finally, the next main section that needs focus on is the ending when many people get killed. This is because it is the ending of the show needs to be very detailed as the ensemble needs to react to this to create a picture. Overall, I think what needs to improve are the ensemble moments as some people are doing it half heartedly which brings down the energy in the piece.

Character Questions

To help me develop my character more I wanted to answer the five w's questions that the practitcor or used Stanislavski. I learnt about Stanislavski methods in year 10 and I have used them every since as I have found them very helpful.

The Five Questions are:

Who I am?
Why am I here?
What do I want ?
Where am I?
What will I do want achieve my want?

Answer:
I am Marcus Andronicus who is brother of Titus Andronicus. I love my brother and I am proud that he is one of the best soldiers in Rome. I am here because I have just come back from a ten year war and now I want peace.I just want to live my life how I use to live.  However , this isn't the case as so much has happened since I have been back in Rome. Like my niece has been raped , had her arms and tongue cut off. Seeing her like this was awful and bringing her to Titus was painful for me. The people who did where Demetrius and Chiron and I want to see them suffer. Lavinia is such a sweet and precious and I just don't understand how they could rape a small child or even harm her!  When Titus found out he went mad. It kind of scared me how he laughed about it. Not a shed of tears. Just laughter. I hope my brother is okay as he has just killed his daughter because she is no longer a virgin any more.  It was hard for to watch Lavinia get killed but I can understand why Titus would do it. Because she's no longer pure and no man will want to marry a women who cant please him. If I am honest though I am relieved that Titus has revenge and has killed Demetrius and Chiron because they deserve it! I personally don't want war however if somebody kills people that I love I would want the same on them. What I will do to achieve want I want is try and stay calm and look after everyone as much as I can. I don't want to kill anyone. Sometimes it is hard to calm especially when I saw Lavinia in that state however I have too. Because if I'm not then everyone will be killing each other and there will be nobody left!

Love Dance & Trees

I forgot to post my notes from a couple weeks but in week 2 of this term Ben directed the love dance. The whole cast are in the love dance and we start it when Saturninus ( Hannah) says the line 'This day shall be a love-day, Tamora' . We start doing the love dance getting into our pairs. My partner is Katie and the dance starts with a contact jam but we don't touch each other. Then either one of us can run off and the other must follow and do the same thing again. I found this really fun and quite easy to do. I think we don't need to go over this to many times as it is properly going to be one of the simplest dances we have so fare. After this, the drums start to play and we need to move out the centre and do the love dance contact jam in slow movement. While we are doing this is slowly movement we find our way to the floor and lie dead.

I like the dance as its simple but effective and its really easy. However everyone needs to commit as it will look rubbish if its not dynamic. Another element that is important is the transitions of getting some people out of the middle because it will look messy if 10 people run. In addition to this, we need to balance the space! as this is a improvised section it can be quite risky as it will look bad if the are the majority of the cast in a certain section of the piece. In addition to this, we need to make sure the space is epically when we fall to  the ground because we will be lying there for a long and when we turn into tress the piece it wont look as effective.

We do lie down for quite a while and we have to stay because if we fidget it will distract the audience from what is happening in the scene.  We start to transition into a tree on the line " The forest walks are wide and spacious " and we slowly start to move our hands like we turning into a tree. This needs to be really neat, clean and clear to the audience what is going so people need again commit and explore different way in how we can form a tree.

The tree section does look really good and I love it when moved around the character Bassianus and Lavinia in the forest. However, I like the idea but when we were doing it the scene did look quite but I think is because the space wasn't balanced and we didn't   cleanly move around the space.

Finally, I do really like the transition from going into the love dance and the forest but we need to build our stamina so can fully commit.

Week 5 Rehearsals

Tuesday 12 April 2015

Today in Shakespeare rehearsals I think we got quite a bit done however I think we are still quite behind with the process in of where we want our show to be. We started from page 25 which is when Katie and Esther swap as Titus. They swap when Katie dips her hand in the coldrin to show she has cut her hand off and spats the blood pack on Esther's stump ( which is her hand that pretends it is cut off.   In this part I have a small monologue that I don't confidently know as its my last section of lines and therefore I have looked at it last.  When I read the play for the first time in half term I didn't really understand what my character was talking however I know understand that it is about the two that the messenger brings on.  In addition to this, from use blocking this section I have started to understand what my character would do and how he/she would react. For example , we are portraying Young Lucius as this vulnerable, young and scared child and as I am playing Marcus who is 'the mother' of the play I was caring for Young Lucius. The moments I need to work on is when Esther (Titus) throws a skull at me during her monologue. I need to work on this moment because I am aware that I am not acting truthful to the given circumstances and I think this moment is really important in the monologue as it is when Titus is staying to go a bit crazy.  As well as, going through the play itself we started to work on the ensemble moments. I love all the ensemble moments in the play as I think they emphasis the themes of the scene. For example, while Esther is going her monologue the ensemble are pretending to have a fake hand and kind play around with it in a dark and weird way, but it looks really cool. We directed the switch between Nicole and I as we are sharing the role of Marcus. So the way we swap the role is by when I exit after Titus monologue. As the ensemble our round the edge the of the stage when all of the cast walk slowly around the sage to change potion I enter and swap position with Nicole. While this happening Samara who is playing Young Lucius is playing a sort of it game with Aaron while every moves. I like this because it shows Young Lucius is just a small kid and I like the idea of only him seeing the bad in Aaron.

As I am now the part of the ensemble I need to start remembering and going over the parts we have already directed as I am starting to find it hard to remember for example the Haka. In Act 3 scene 2 the ensemble are sitting down in quite a heavy way.  I found this quite easy to do as from the warm up of exploring our spine I used my spine to reposition my posture which made me feel heavier. We do this until when Lavinia writes on the floor who  cut off her tongue and arms. As this apart is a cruallsuall  part in the play I can see why Ben wanted us to all look in to see who did this to Lavinia . I do like this part as it emphasis the idea of who Titus is dying to know who did this to his daughter. When Young Lucius says the line " Stuprum, Chiron and Demetrius" the ensemble slowly flow back into sitting. I do like this idea however I just feel it the ensemble could do something else like stay by playing the objective to find (while sitting down) so it looks like that they are trying to find them.

The next ensemble section is when Aaron says the line " did you not use his daughter very friendly? " This is my favourite part of the scene because its just so fun to do. All the females in the ensemble turn out and open our legs we giving birth to the audience. Also, we do the breathe action as well. I like this this idea because it emphasise the line and in the line we are constantly looking inwards so to do something where we turn outwards looks quite nice.  We do this until the line " For our beloved mother in her pains" where we all scream like we in labour. Then Becky gets the black cloth and runs round the stage with it and then wraps it round to form a baby. When Becky has done this she then bangs the drum and we all fall to the floor. As don't actually have the black cloth on rehearsal I cant exactly say what I think of the idea however I do like the transition of the black cloth turning into the baby.  I think it will look fine but it needs to be neat and dynamic and the well Becky walks will massively effect the piece. We leant the power of the walk in week 1 of rehearsal and I found it really helpful as it started to make look at the detail in my acting.

I think the section in rehearsal looks really good however we still need to pick up the past a bit. In addition to this, in my opinion , the reason why rehearsals are going quite slow past because not everyone in the cast is treating these rehearsals seriously and they are doing it half heartedly which at times can be annoying. For the quality of the show to improve everyone needs to start committing to their character a lot more. I don't just mean the large characters where they have lines but also the ensemble parts that creates the atmosphere on stage. I understand that sometimes it can be difficult to give 100%  in a four rehearsal and sometimes I just give up and sit down and down give however I think we all need to build our stamina a lot more as we are all in the show and hardly anyone leaves the stage.

After the break Ben wanted to incorporate the sword fighting section. I loved sword as I use to fence foil as kid, so I thought it was really easy.  But I thought wrong. I was properly the worst in the class as I had to my right hand when I am left hander.  I did find it really funny but  difficult to control the bamboo stick. I love the idea of using the bamboo sticks however the question whether we will be able to pull off making the sword look easy and dynamic.

Wednesday 13 April 2015

Today in rehearsals we practice the Haka dance as we haven't done that in a while. It was helpful to go over the Haka as this could be a strong opening that needs to be perfect. I think the extra on the Haka benefited us some people forgot certain parts and  it was a good opportunity for us to ask each other questions.  We spent about 30 minutes on the Haka and when we did a whole run though it was almost perfect. For the Haka to improve we need to go over re watch the videos and character building on a  warrior character as we concentrating so much the what to do when by the time we get to the dress run it should be perfect.

After the Haka run we start to block the second Haka which will be when we are all Goths in of Act 3 scene 4. The way the second starts is Jamilah is on stage run to the right hand hand side and gets confronted with the Goths. After this, she runs to the left and gets confronted again.  Then the ensemble do the synchronised movement that is very similar to the first Haka. When we lower on our knees I use the warm up do at the beginning to help with balancing and flow of my movement.  I also find the Laban movement of Slash to get my movement of a warrior. Then ensemble  form a semi circle so Jamilah cant escape. Then Jamilah runs to climb the ladder and says her monologue. While Jamilah is saying her lines we need to be reacting to what she is saying as Jamilah is explaining to the audience what is going.  We need to be reacting constantly to what is especially as we don't have anything else to do until Lucius says " A halter, soldiers! hang him on this tree" and we go and grab Aaron and hung him. I like the how Ben directed this bit as we are hanging Aaron like he's being crucified however I am just concerned that the transition of this will look  messy because we aren't fully confident with our characters and what we are doing yet. When we Shanay who is playing Aaron. We go back to our original position to the floor. After this, I'm not sure if we exit off if we stay as Ben never said to exit off however I thin the Goths should exit because the next scene gets quite tense with Aaron and Lucius and I just feel that  the stage should be bare so there are distraction , in my opinion.  We only got up to page 40 so we have made some progress as we only have nine more pages until we finish blocking everything and then we can start doing run through and focusing on the dances such as the Lone dance and the Haka.

What I need to do for next week is start actioning my text as I am not responding and reacting to what is happening around me .

Tuesday 5th & Wednesday 6 April

Tuesday 5th

So today in rehearsal we did run thought from page 19 to the end of the play. I was quite happy that were doing this because I wanted to know what lines I knew and what lines I didn't know. For example, I realised that I pretty know my lines just not my queues to say them. Therefore I feel like I am in a good place with the process of my character and the lines. To improve, I need to start actioning and doing more character work in spare time as I think this will help me to learn my lines quicker and to help me understand Marcus more. In addition to this, the run through made me realise that I need to start working harder my lines and character as I think this term I haven't been as on it as the previous terms.  Furthermore, I'm kind of like it when Ben just steps back and tells us to start the play as when I read the play I honestly didn't like or understand it but when we did it in lesson I really liked the play.

Before we start the rehearsals we do the warm up that we do before everyone where we roll down the spine and let our upper body freely move. I always like doing this as its more off an independent warm up where can I do one section of it for longer than others. For example on Monday I rolled down my spine three times as my shoulders felt really sift. When every has finished exploring our back, legs and arms we slowly star rise into the potion of the warrior pose so we can start side stretch. When I did side stretch on Monday I think it was the best I have ever done it so fare as I was alert and focus. My my side stretch were really sharp and controlled but the part of side stretch I have improved on is sticking my legs and arms into the air and slowly lowering them. At the beginning of Titus rehearsals I found it really different to lower my arms and legs at the same but I now find it easier and I just embrace the pain!  I find doing this exercises really helpful and easy to do now. It helps me to feel energised.

After the warm up we wet straight into the run through. I have already spoken about the warm up however the thing I have haven't mentioned is my technique in how I am saying the lines. As I sort of ignored the punctuation when I was learning lines I have start pausing and stopping in the places and while I was performing I start realising this.  Therefore I just need to start looking over my lines before and relearn the so I can say correctly. As well as , I need to start doing some vocal colour exercises especially for my monologue as when I am a acting my voice goes really high and doesn't sound or feel supported which means I could be harming it. I need to make sure this doesn't happen in the performance as the audience wont be able to understand me properly and I need to look after my voice and damaged it as we are performing the show four times.

As well as this , in today's lesson we did some work of our animal we have chosen that represents our character. Finding animals that matched Marcus was quite difficult for me  but I think that is because I am quite a picky person. To begin with, Ben told to sit comfortably with our eyes closed. Then Ben told us to slowly start to balance our weight to how the animal would do it and start to re posture our spine to match our animal. I found this part quite easy our however when Ben said to open I found it quite differcult to see the world in my Mountain dogs eyes. I think this could be because I didn't really do much research on how my animal sees the world. However, this is a starting point on how I need to improve on my character as I think I struggle with how Marcus see the world. To overcome this obstacle I could re read the play and start to write down  Marcus thoughts and feelings. As well as this I need to answer the questions from Stanislavsky technique of naturalism as I believe this will help with how Marcus psychologically thinks.

Wednesday 6th

On Wednesday rehearsals I think I went quite well however we are starting to get behind on what we wanted to get done. The other two plays have nearly finished and we have only directed the first half . Even through we are behind I'm not really worried as I think with our play there is a lot more to think about as we are on stage all the time and directing a cast of all females must be really different. On Wednesday we got to see the set box for the first time. I personally love the set and I think TTA are doing a really good , as well as 'thinking about the budget' .

After the short TTA meeting we did we started properly going through page 19 - 22. Oblivious getting 4 pages done isn't good enough and we cant keep on getting 4 pages every two hours or wise we never finish the show to a high standard. If I'm honest Wednesday's rehearsals were boring I stood there for about 1 hour 30 mins being tree. I mean don't get me wrong I get it that I need to build stamina and stuff but it was really boring however I'm glad that I started standing for the degeneration of time being a tree as some people just gave up and sat down.  After this scene we did my monologue where I am talking about Lavinia tongue and arms being cut off. I think the monologue went really well considering it was the first time I properly went for it and the first Ben directed it. However I do need to ground my voice more as I felt at the end I started straining it.

Overall, I think this week rehearsals went okay however it is going slower than I expected it to be. We do really need to start picking the paste up or wise when it come to end it will be really rushed and in my opinion the ending is the most important as it when the majority of the character dies.

Laban Movement

In term 3 I studied Laban Movements and I found  this one of the most helpful lessons so I wanted to do it for my character Marcus. The Laban Movements consist of combining direction , weight and speed.  direction is direct or indirect , weight is heavy or light and speed is sustained or staccato. I found some really images and videos to help me remember the process of discovering each element., which are:

Finding these were helpful to me as it just reminded me how each one worked. Personally, I think Marcus is Dab because he is caring and loyal friend who doesn't want war but he will stick up for what he believes in. I think this links with dab because dab is a light sudden (staccato ) movement which happens when you don't expect it. The way I make dab  is by working using my weight, speed and direction to help me create it.  I found this is really helpful structure that helps you think of each one to create your movement.

Direct - Heavy - Staccato = Punch
Indirect - Heavy - Sustained = Slash
Direct - Heavy - Sustained = Push
Indirect - Heavy - Sustained = Wring
Direct - Light - Staccato = Dab
Indirect - Light - Staccato = Flick
Direct - Light, Sustained = Glide
Indirect - Light - Sustained = Float

In the process of making dab I found it really difficult to physicalise being light. So to overcome I decided to be as heavy  and then do you opposite of this and be as light as I can.
I think I find it easier to heavy as I am naturally and push person. Not saying I go round being aggressive all time but I am a direct heavy sustained person who is quite tense a lot of the time.  I did find it easy to be direct as it is one of my characteristics  however when I started combing all the three together it got a lot harder as at times I felt like I was being too light and being sustained instead of being staccato. This is one of the challenges I will face when playing as I need to start working out his given circumstances and objectives so I know where he is more light or more direct.

In addition, last term we did got into pairs and had a conversation with the movement that we chose. I don't remember who my partner was or what movement I chose however I did to think about this as it will help me to start truthfully reacting to the given circumstances.

Overall , I found independent character work really helpful and helped me know what more I need to do and work on.
